“Is My Child Falling Behind?” 5 Signs That May Indicate a Need for Play Therapy

"My child doesn’t talk as much as others." "He prefers to stay alone instead of playing with friends." If you’ve had thoughts like these, you're not alone. As a certified play therapist, I often meet parents concerned about their child’s development compared to peers.

But what may seem like a simple delay could actually be a sign that your child needs emotional support.

Here Are 5 Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore

  1. Delayed speech development
This might not just be a language issue—it could stem from anxiety or emotional blocks.
  2. Withdrawing from peer interaction
Avoiding social play may reflect difficulties in developing social skills or confidence.
  3. Frequent aggression during play
Repetitive or violent play often mirrors inner frustration or stress.
  4. Persistent lethargy or lack of motivation
Low energy and disinterest could indicate early signs of depression or low self-esteem.
  5. Physical signs of anxiety (e.g., thumb sucking, tics, bedwetting)
These may be nonverbal expressions of ongoing emotional struggle.

Why Play Therapy?

Children aren’t always able to articulate their emotions through words. Play becomes their language—and through it, they express fears, anger, sadness, and even trauma.

Therapists observe play scenarios, behavior patterns, and symbolic choices to uncover what the child may not yet know how to say out loud.

3 Ways Parents Can Help at Home

  • Respond with empathy: Instead of “Why did you do that?”, try “You must have felt really upset.”
  • Schedule short but focused playtime with your child (even 10 minutes goes a long way!)
  • Offer consistent reassurance, especially during moments of anxiety or withdrawal
